Multitasking might sound like a superpower, but it’s often a productivity killer in disguise. Trying to tackle multiple tasks at once can lead to more mistakes, increased stress, and slower results overall.

Just last week in Buenos Aires, I saw a woman taking nine dogs for a stroll while checking her cell phone—an impressive feat but a real-life example of the challenges of multitasking. She was so absorbed that she didn’t even realize when I took a picture of her.

When we split our focus, we dilute our ability to do any one thing well. Research consistently shows that working on one task at a time—what’s often called “monotasking”—leads to higher quality work, faster completion, and less mental fatigue.

Next time you feel the urge to juggle, pause. Prioritize your tasks, give each your full attention, and notice how both your efficiency and peace of mind improve.
